Post-Bariatric Plastic Surgery

Post-bariatric plastic surgery has been growing worldwide due to advances in bariatric procedures.

Stomach reduction surgeries play a crucial role in helping patients with class III obesity (formerly known as morbid obesity) regain their health and increase longevity.

However, significant weight loss often results in excess skin throughout the body, as the skin is not elastic enough to fully retract.

This excess skin does not adapt to the new body contour and may also lead to a series of issues and discomforts, such as difficulty with movement, poor posture, dermatitis in skin folds, among others.

An irregular body contour can negatively affect self-esteem, cause embarrassment, hinder social interaction, and impact sexual life.

Considered a reconstructive procedure rather than merely a cosmetic one, post-bariatric plastic surgery should be seen as a step in the overall weight-loss journey. It is essential for the patient’s health and quality of life.

Who is eligible
This procedure?

Adult men and women who have experienced significant weight loss after major dieting or bariatric surgery may be candidates for this procedure.

To undergo surgery, the patient must be in good overall health and, most importantly, have achieved stable weight.

The plastic surgeon and the physician responsible for the weight-loss process may work together to determine the best time to begin body contour reconstruction.

STAGES

Post-bariatric plastic surgery is performed in stages. In general, it takes about two years for the patient to reach a stable weight.

At this point, we begin carefully planning the body contour reconstruction.

For each stage, the surgeon will determine the most appropriate techniques and which procedures can be safely performed at the same time.

RECOVERY
POSTOPERATIVE CARE

  • The patient should rest for approximately one month, avoiding strenuous exercise and sudden movements.

  • In the first few days, the use of surgical drains may be necessary.

  • Each stage will involve specific postoperative instructions. For example, recovery after breast surgery differs from recovery after abdominal surgery. Therefore, the patient must be cautious and strictly follow the medical team’s guidelines.

  • In post-bariatric surgeries, partial results are visible almost immediately. However, final results may take one to two years to fully develop. This is a long process, but one that brings significant improvements in quality of life.

INCISIONS

Body contouring procedures require incisions that may be extensive. The location and length of the incisions are determined by the surgeon after a thorough evaluation of the patient’s body.

While not always possible, we aim to place scars along natural body contours and in areas that can be concealed by clothing.

Proper postoperative rest is essential, as it helps prevent poor scar formation.

THE SURGERY

The duration of surgery depends on the techniques used and the amount of tissue to be removed. Typically, each stage lasts between three and four hours.

The surgeon will choose either epidural anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, according to the surgical plan.
