Otoplasty / Lobuloplasty(Ear Plastic Surgery)

The Procedure

The correction of prominent ears is a relatively simple procedure. In most cases, local anesthesia with sedation is used. In some situations, general anesthesia may be required. The procedure usually takes approximately one hour.

Who Can Have Otoplasty?

Around the age of 7, the ears are already fully developed. For this reason, otoplasty is a procedure indicated for both adults and children and adolescents, who often experience discomfort or emotional distress due to teasing at school.

Otoplasty

Otoplasty is the plastic surgery of the ears. It is indicated for several cases, such as ears that are very large, prominent, or deformed due to accidents. In aesthetic plastic surgery, the correction of prominent or “protruding” ears is one of the most common procedures.

These cases usually present two main characteristics: the absence of the natural inner fold and a lateral edge that protrudes away from the head, creating the appearance of ears that are larger than normal.

Lobuloplasty

A tear or split in the earlobe can occur for several reasons, including accidents, allergic reactions, wearing very heavy earrings, or ear gauges. During earlobe reconstruction, the surgeon reopens the lesion and carefully brings the torn edges together using sutures.

The procedure takes about 30 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia. Hospitalization is not required. The scar is located where the tear was and is usually very thin and discreet. After surgery, it is necessary to avoid wearing earrings for approximately three months. The ears can be pierced again, but it is important that the new piercing is not placed over the previous one.

RECOVERY
POSTOPERATIVE CARE

  • A compression band should be worn for approximately two months, or until the surgeon authorizes its removal.

  • Avoid trauma to the ears, including sleeping on them, for about one month.

  • Return to desk work is usually possible within a few days.

  • Intense physical activities should be avoided for at least one month.

  • Surgical results can be noticed as early as the first month after the procedure.

  • The scar takes around six months to fully mature.

Technique

The surgery involves a small incision behind the ear. Through this incision, the surgeon reshapes the cartilage to create the fold and brings the ear closer to the head. The scar is discreet and remains hidden behind the ear.
