Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure of the eyelids. It includes two distinct techniques that can be performed at the same time: upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery.
Upper blepharoplasty is recommended for individuals with drooping eyelids, puffiness, or excess skin and fat, which may result in a tired and aged appearance.
This procedure does not provide overall facial rejuvenation, but it opens up the eyes, giving the face a more refreshed look and correcting visual impairment caused by excess eyelid skin.
Upper blepharoplasty can also improve the contour of eyes with a downturned appearance.
Lower blepharoplasty is indicated for patients with under-eye fat bags and/or excess skin that do not subside in the early morning hours and remain noticeable throughout the day.
It also corrects fine wrinkles under the eyes and sagging of the lower eyelids. The procedure can be performed in combination with upper blepharoplasty, providing even more significant improvement in the overall appearance of the eyes.
The procedure removes excess skin and fat, corrects muscle laxity, and treats eyelid ptosis (drooping eyelids).
Scars are very discreet, strategically hidden within the natural crease of the upper eyelid and just below the lower eyelashes.
Blepharoplasty takes approximately one hour. The most commonly used anesthesia is local anesthesia with sedation.
General anesthesia may also be used, depending on the surgeon’s evaluation of each individual case.
The recommended rest period ranges from seven to ten days. After this time, patients are usually able to return to work.
More intense physical activities should be avoided for at least two weeks.
As with any surgical procedure, bruising around the eyes may occur and typically resolves within about one week.
Final results gradually become noticeable after approximately three months.
